Tips for using language learning podcasts

Still trying to decide if you can learn a language just by listening to language learning podcasts? Use these listening tips to ensure your podcast experience is helpful instead of frustrating.

  • Choose the right podcast. Your language learning podcast should match your proficiency and interest level. If it’s too easy, too hard, or not interesting, you may not listen to it often enough to be helpful!
  • Slow playback down. If the hosts are speaking a little too quickly, slow down the speed. This is an especially helpful feature if you’re trying to master pronunciation, or if the host has a different accent than you’re used to.
  • Repeat tricky parts. Podcasts have something live lessons don’t: a rewind button! Feel free to go back over sentences or phrases that you didn’t grasp, or start the whole episode to let it sink in.
  • Try to listen actively. While podcasts and household chores are a great multitasking pair, it’s best to actively listen to language learning podcasts rather than put them on in the background. (Save the multitasking for your next true crime podcast!)
  • Use the podcast transcript. Most podcasts provide transcripts for increased accessibility. Refer to these transcripts as needed, and feel free to print them out and circle new words and phrases as you listen.

Immerse yourself in language learning podcasts

Becoming immersed in a culture is one of the most effective ways to learn a language, and podcasts let you experience language immersion without ever leaving your home. (Unless you’re listening to them in the car, of course!) These podcasts are great supplements to your current language lessons, or they can refresh your knowledge of another language in just a few episodes. Plus, language learning podcasts can help you with other milestones, such as taking less time to learn a new language, and even learning two languages at once!
