Best Ways To Ask ‘How Can I Help You?’ in Spanish

Walk into any hotel or store in a Spanish-speaking country and you’ll likely be greeted with ¿En qué puedo servirle? or ¿Cómo puedo ayudarlo? But these aren’t the only ways to ask “How can I help you?” in Spanish.

With this guide, you’ll learn all the ways to offer help in Spanish, depending on who you’re talking to and what type of social situation you’re in.

Tips on how to say ‘How can I help you?’ in Spanish

Just as with other everyday questions like “What are you doing?” in Spanish, there are several factors to consider when learning how to ask “How can I help you?”

Learn how to conjugate poder

The verb poder is essential for asking “How can I help you” in Spanish, so knowing how to conjugate it correctly is essential.

Poder is one of the most frequently used irregular verbs in Spanish. When offering help, you’ll primarily need to use it in the present tense yo form, which is simply puedo. To learn other useful forms of poder, consult a Spanish conjugation dictionary.

Understand the nuances of ayudar vs. servir

To offer help in Spanish, you can use either ayudar or servir as an infinitive after puedo. Ayudar is your go-to choice to offer general assistance, like offering to help a friend with homework. Servir is used more specifically for attending to a client or customer, so you’ll hear it more often in customer service or hospitality settings.

Use the correct object pronoun

When you’re asking someone if they need help, you’ll need to use an object pronoun. Understanding the difference between usted vs. tu is essential for choosing which object pronoun to use.

While servir consistently uses a Spanish indirect object pronoun (te, le, les) to address the person being helped, the verb ayudar can use either an indirect or direct object pronoun in Spanish, depending on where you are. In many parts of Latin America, the direct object pronoun (te, lo/la, los/las) is used with ayudar, whereas in Spain, the indirect object pronoun is preferred.

Use the correct punctuation in written Spanish

As with all questions in Spanish, “How can I help you?” starts with an inverted punctuation mark in writing. The Spanish upside-down question mark signals to the reader that a question is coming.

Informal ways to offer help to one person

You’ll want to offer help informally when speaking to a family member, friend, or someone who’s around the same age as you.

¿Cómo puedo ayudarte?

This is a general and very common way to ask “How can I help you?” when offering assistance. For example:

  • Preparar una mudanza no es fácil. ¿Cómo puedo ayudarte? = Getting ready for a move isn’t easy. How can I help you?

You can also place the object pronoun in front of puedo to offer help informally:

  • Te ves muy cansado. ¿Cómo te puedo ayudar? = You look very tired. How can I help you?

Formal ways to offer help to one person

Offer help formally when addressing a stranger, elder, superior, or in business settings.

¿Cómo puedo ayudarle?

This is a general, polite, and respectful way to ask, “How can I help you?” in Spanish.

  • Buenos días, señor. ¿Cómo puedo ayudarle? = Good morning, sir. How can I help you?

This phrase is interchangeable with ¿En qué puedo ayudarle?, where the pronoun can also be placed in front of puedo

  • Hola. Hotel Las Perdices. ¿En qué le puedo ayudar? = Hello. Las Perdices hotel. How can I help you?

¿En qué puedo servirle?

This phrase is very common in customer service and retail environments.

  • Bienvenido al hotel. ¿En qué puedo servirle? = Welcome to the hotel. How can I help you?

You can also place the indirect object le in front of puedo.

  • Gracias por venir. ¿En qué le puedo servir? = Thank you for coming. How can I help you?

How to offer help to a group of people

When you’re offering help to a group, you’ll use les for both formal and informal situations in Latin America. In Spain, you can keep the same sentence structure and replace les with os when speaking to a group informally.

¿Cómo puedo ayudarles?

This is the most common and versatile way to ask “How can I help you all?” in a general sense.

  • Veo que están trabajando duro. ¿Cómo puedo ayudarles a terminar? = I see you’re working hard. How can I help you all finish?

You can also place the indirect object les in front of puedo. This phrasing is polite and common for offering general assistance to multiple individuals.

  • Buenas tardes a todos. ¿En qué les puedo ayudar hoy? = Good afternoon everyone. How can I help you all today?

¿En qué puedo servirles?

This phrase is standard in professional or service-oriented contexts when addressing multiple clients or customers.

  • Buenas tardes, señor y señora Rodríguez. ¿En qué puedo servirles hoy? = Good afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez. How can I help you today?

Like the singular form le, you can place the plural indirect object pronoun les before puedo.

  • Bienvenidos a nuestra tienda. ¿En qué les puedo servir? = Welcome to our store. How can I help you?
